Thousands of North Glasgow residents turned out to enjoy a summer fun filled afternoon in Springburn Park on Saturday 25th July for the 7th annual Fun in the Park - north Glasgow's biggest FREE community event.
Fun in the Park continues to get bigger and better every year and this year was no exception as local families joined in an action packed programme guaranteed to keep everyone smiling and entertained. The day kicked off with loads of free fun activities including mountain biking, bouncy castles, football, adventure courses, gladiator challenge, horse & dray rides, face painting, bungee run and a giant climbing wall.
Baillie Jim Todd officially opened the event on the main stage by welcoming everyone along followed by a presentation to competition winner Stanley Tsoi aged 9 from St Josephs Primary School, who designed the event's official Fun in the Park promotional poster. Kirkintilloch Pipe Band followed and proudly made their way around the main arena playing to the crowds as they entered the park.
Entertainment highlights this year included Maryhill Integration Network who brought a touch of worldly glamour with their ‘World of Fashion, Dance and Entertainment’ display showcasing colourful costumes, dance and music from across the globe. Dance displays had the crowd tapping their toes during energetic performances from The Phoenix Future Together Project, Dance Time, Barmulloch School of Dance, Tamzins Majorettes and Sidekix Cheerleaders.
Giving the crowds a great laugh in the main arena was the hilarious Drakes of Hazzard sheepdog and duck act led by Mark Willie, whilst Kirkintilloch Dog Display attracted attention with another entertaining demonstration starring some furry canine friends. And if all that wasn’t enough, fun goers got the chance to get up close and personal with magnificent birds of prey including owls and falcons with our professional falconers. Live music in the newly created Music Zone went down a storm with with performances throughout the day from The Young Stages, Gideon, LK Projection, Street Light, John & David, Voodoo Economics & Depot Arts Music.
Over fifty local health and wellbeing projects and organisations took part in the various themed zones (Health, Information, Art, Children & Youth, Animal, Music & Green Zone) giving people the chance to learn about the latest services in their local area and pick up loads of freebies & goodie bags. In the Green Zone there was an opportunity to learn about recycling and how to 'grow your own' produce . Local groups and projects also benefited from attending on the day by raising awareness of their charity such as Arthritis Care, Stobhill Kidney Patients Association, and Carers Care North Glasgow who managed to raise over £400 in vital funds.
The Art Zones hosted by Depot Arts Co, housed local creative arts groups offering free workshops including circus skills workshops, printing and painting. The Animal Zone housed some fluffy and slithery friends provided by Amazonia in our small petting zoo alongside the Scottish SPCA.
